Sisterly Advice: Preparing for Success in the Workforce
Here are three important things I want my baby sister to know before becoming an employee.
You have a choice
Just like individuals choose to nourish themselves with healthy and energizing foods, it’s important to choose an organization that values and respects you. Remember, you have skills and talents that are valuable, and you deserve to work in an environment that appreciates and supports your growth. Don’t settle for a workplace that treats you poorly or makes you feel like trash. Seek out organizations that align with your values and prioritize your well-being.
Understand your personal work style
Pay attention to how you approach tasks, assignments, and group work. Take note of what methods and environments bring out the best in you and allow you to perform optimally. This self-awareness will help you make informed decisions about the types of roles and companies that will be a good fit for you. Recognize your strengths, weaknesses, and preferences, and seek opportunities that align with your work style.
Identify your non-negotiables
Non-negotiables are aspects that you cannot tolerate or accept in a work environment. These could be things like toxic behavior, lack of work-life balance, or unethical practices. It’s important to identify your non-negotiables early on and be vigilant in avoiding situations that go against your values. Exposing yourself to prolonged periods of negativity or situations that clash with your non-negotiables can have a detrimental effect on your performance and well-being.
I hope you keep these points in mind and feel equipped to navigate the job market and find fulfilling employment that aligns with your values and allows you to thrive. Remember, you have the power to choose your path and create a positive work experience for yourself.
